The Annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony brings families together to celebrate the holiday season in the Heart of Kansas City. In its 86th year, this year’s ceremony is poised to be a night to remember with appearances and performances by many Kansas City favorites.
The 2015 honored guest to “Flip the Switch” and illuminate the Country Club Plaza is Kansas City native and No. 1 New York Times Bestselling author of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn. Flynn, whose work has been published in 28 countries and was nominated for a Golden Globe award, now resides in Chicago with her husband and two children.
In addition to special guest Gillian Flynn, this year’s ceremony features a tribute to the World Champion Kansas City Royals as well as performances by Isaac Cates and Ordained; Brad Cunningham; The Snow Globes, featuring Barclay Martin, Rick Willoughby and Lindsey Jones Pryor; and Hembree, a five-piece indie rock band from right here in Kansas City. Prior to the ceremony, from 5–6 p.m., guests can enjoy performances by The Kansas City Ballet’s KCB II, The Snow Globes, SunRaise Choir and puppet theatre company Mesner Puppets. At 7 p.m., the evening will feature an hour-long free concert by Hembree on the main stage.
The lighting program begins at 6 p.m., with the flip of the switch at 6:54 p.m. Three simultaneous fireworks displays will take place immediately after the Flip of the Switch: near the stage at Nichols and Pennsylvania (above Burberry); one block east of the stage at Nichols and Broadway (across from Helzberg); and atop the InterContinental Hotel.
The ceremony main stage will once again be located on Nichols Road and Pennsylvania, near Brio Tuscan Grille and Burberry. Best views of the ceremony stage will be in the Nichols and Pennsylvania intersection, and along Nichols Road between Pennsylvania and Broadway. Several nearby garages will provide free parking close to the stage.
Recommended nearby parking garages include Valencia Garage (by Gap and H&M) on he north side of 47th and Pennsylvania; Neptune Garage (behind American Eagle and Houston’s) on Wornall near 46th Street; Seville Garage (near The Capital Grille and Bank of America) behind the main stage on Jefferson and Nichols Road; and the Plaza III garage near Victoria’s Secret on Pennsylvania.
The KCP&L Plaza Lights shine daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., Thanksgiving through Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016. All Plaza parking garages will be open and accessible throughout the KCP&L Plaza Lights season.
